Blood Drops animation

A heartwarming animation brings this lifesaving brand to life.

Blood Drops animation

I took inspiration from and paid tribute to Disney animators Ollie Johnston and Frank Thomas’s 12 basic principles of animation, particularly squash and stretch, staging, and appeal.

  • Challenge My supervisor got an inspired request from a client: create an animation for social media with two blood drops flipping and joining as a heart. She asked the staff designers if anyone wanted to take on the project. I eagerly volunteered. Although I had created many motion graphics using other software and undergone extensive Adobe After Effects training, this would be my first work project in After Effects.
  • Solution I was looking to imbue these inanimate objects with a warm personality viewers could relate to, an approach that syncs with the American Red Cross brand and humanitarian mission. To achieve this effect, I used classic motion graphics techniques including easing and overshooting to give the objects a sense of weight and dynamism.
  • Result My boss (“You nailed it!”) and the client (“Awesome work!”) both praised the results in their feedback. The animation appeared on the American Red Cross Blood Donors Facebook page and earned more than 100 likes.
